Nestled within the picturesque landscapes of West Yorkshire, the village of Marsden offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a vibrant food scene. This blog article is a must for discovering Marsden. Whether you’re a fan of scenic countryside walks, historic canals, or cozy village charm, Marsden has something to offer. During our visit, we had the pleasure of exploring this wonderful destination and indulging in an unforgettable meal at Oi Dumplings – a beloved eatery that, unfortunately, is currently closed due to a fire. However, they continue to delight food lovers through pop-ups in various locations.

A Stroll Through Marsden’s Scenic Beauty

Marsden is the kind of place that instantly makes you feel at home. Surrounded by rolling hills and part of the stunning Peak District National Park, this village is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Our visit began with a peaceful walk along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, where narrowboats lazily drifted by, and charming stone cottages lined the water’s edge.

For those seeking adventure, the nearby Marsden Moor Estate is a must-visit. Managed by the National Trust, this vast expanse of moorland offers breathtaking views and an opportunity to immerse yourself in Yorkshire’s wild beauty. The rugged trails are perfect for hikers and nature lovers alike, with the added bonus of spotting local wildlife.

Exploring Marsden’s Rich History

Beyond its natural beauty, Marsden boasts a fascinating industrial heritage. The Standedge Tunnel, Britain’s longest, deepest, and highest canal tunnel, is a marvel of engineering that dates back to the early 19th century. We took a guided tour and was fascinated by the tales of the workers who built this incredible structure by hand. The nearby Tunnel End Visitor Centre provides great insight into the history of the area, making it a worthwhile stop for history buffs.

St. Bartholomew’s Church and the River Crossing

One of the most striking landmarks in Marsden is St. Bartholomew’s Church, a beautiful 19th-century church that stands proudly in the heart of the village. Built in 1895, this grand structure reflects the village’s rich heritage and serves as a central point for the community. The intricate stonework and stained-glass windows make it a sight to behold, especially when bathed in the golden light of sunset.

Running alongside the church is the River Colne, a gently flowing waterway that adds to Marsden’s charm. A small stone bridge crosses the river, providing a picturesque viewpoint that perfectly frames the church and the surrounding village. Standing on this bridge, listening to the soothing sound of the river, was one of the most peaceful moments of our visit. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty of Marsden.

A Culinary Delight at Oi Dumplings

After a day of exploring, we were eager to refuel with some delicious food. Oi Dumplings (Cafe Oi) had been on our radar for a while, and it did not disappoint. This small but mighty eatery is known for its handcrafted dumplings and bold, flavorful dishes inspired by Asian cuisine.

The menu was a delightful mix of dumpling varieties, each carefully made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. I opted for a selection that included their signature pork and chive dumplings, as well as a vegetarian option filled with mushroom and tofu. Every bite was a perfect balance of flavors; savory, aromatic, and incredibly satisfying. We also tried the pork belly

Beyond the dumplings, I also tried their bao buns, which were soft, pillowy, and filled with deliciously marinated meats and vibrant toppings. The meal was a testament to the skill and passion behind the Oi Dumplings concept, and it was easy to see why it had gained such a loyal following.

Oi Dumplings’ Resilience and Pop-Ups

Tragically, Oi Dumplings (Cafe Oi) had to temporarily close its doors due to a fire. However, their commitment to serving amazing food hasn’t wavered. They’ve been popping up at various locations, continuing to share their delicious dumplings with eager fans. If you’re keen to experience their incredible flavors, I highly recommend checking their social media for updates on upcoming events.

Update: June 2026 – Cafe Oi is being renovated! Follow their progress on their Oi Dumplings Facebook page.

Redbrook Reservoir

After a delicious lunch in the village, I headed up to Redbrook Reservoir, a peaceful spot just outside the centre of Marsden. The reservoir is owned by the Canal and Rivers Trust and is used by the Redbrook Sailing Club, who offer paddleboarding and sailing. The still water, surrounded by gentle hills and open skies, was the perfect place to unwind. If you’re spending the day in Marsden, Redbrook is definitely worth the short walk for a moment of fresh air and that golden Yorkshire light. This reservoir is also used by local Wild swimmers, which is very popular at the moment.

Discovering Marsden: Final Thoughts

Marsden is a village that captures your heart with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. My visit was made even more special by the fantastic meal at Oi Dumplings, a restaurant that truly understands the art of comfort food. While their permanent location remains closed for now, I have no doubt they’ll be back stronger than ever. Until then, I’ll be keeping an eye out for their pop-ups, eagerly awaiting my next dumpling fix.

If you find yourself in Yorkshire, make sure to visit Marsden – you won’t regret it! And if you get the chance to try Oi Dumplings, don’t miss it. Their food is a delicious reminder that even in challenging times, passion and great flavors will always shine through.
