Getting there

Armathwaite Hall is located in Bassenthwaite, the most northern part of the Lake District. It takes approximately 2.5 hours from Manchester, 2 hours from Leeds, 3 hours from Birmingham and 5.5 hours from London. Whichever route you take, you are guaranteed beautiful views and scenery along the way.

It’s full address is: Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa, Bassenthwaite Lake, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4RE

Are There Any Deals?

The hotel has the standard bed & breakfast and evening meal packages as well as packages for weekend stays. There are also day packages for afternoon tea and using the spa. We booked an overnight spa which included the evening meal. Our advice is to shop around for deals and also try the hotel directly.

The Hotel

The original building dates back to 1548 and is truly stunning. Our room was in the original building, a deluxe lakeside view. There are also rooms near the spa, which are around the courtyard and garden. These are in newer buildings.

Room Types & Booking Tips

The hotel offers a variety of room categories, from classic country house rooms to modern spa suites. We stayed in a Lake View Room, and waking up to panoramic views of Skiddaw mountain and Bassenthwaite Lake felt like a dream.

Rooms are spacious, with plush beds, elegant furnishings, and thoughtful touches like fresh fruit and luxury toiletries. If you’re visiting for a Lake District spa break, consider booking a room in the spa wing for easy access to the wellness area, although these rooms are more modern, so book the other wing if you prefer the old house. The best deals will be on the Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa website.

When to Book: Weekends fill up quickly, especially in spring and autumn. Book midweek for better rates and a quieter atmosphere.

The Evening Meal

Drinks in the amazing bar was followed by an evening meal hosted in the beautiful lake view restaurant. An amuse bouche of mushroom soup, starter of rabbit ravioli, main of roast lamb, and chocolate pudding. The food was immaculately presented but there was one small criticism, overdoing the amount of pancetta on the starter and main.

Spa Facilities & Treatments at Armathwaite Hall

If you’re dreaming of a luxury spa escape in the Lake District, Armathwaite Hall’s wellness facilities are truly exceptional. Nestled in the serene landscape overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake, the spa blends nature with indulgence.

The Spa at Armathwaite Hall features a hydrotherapy pool, outdoor hot tub, thermal suite, and aroma steam room, all designed to promote deep relaxation. Whether you’re enjoying a calming swim with lake views or lounging in the outdoor spa garden, the setting is both tranquil and luxurious.

For treatments, the menu includes everything from aromatherapy massages to signature facials and bespoke spa day packages. I opted for a tension-relieving back massage, and it was one of the best I’ve had in the UK, attentive, professional, and deeply soothing. Check out the Armathwaite Hall Spa website for the latest deals.

Tip: Booking a spa package gives you access to all the facilities — perfect for a romantic spa weekend or girlfriend getaway in Cumbria.

Walking to the Lake

From the hotel, you can walk to the lake, over a small bridge and through the woods. It is well worth the short walk and there are lovely view.

A Walk with Herbie & Hugo, the Alpaca’s

A short walk across the fields is the Lake District Wildlife Park. We decided to talk two Alpacas for a walk, Herbie & Hugo. The walk is an hour long and you take them, along with a keeper, past a small lake, through the woods and to the hotel grounds for some amazing photos. They are wonderfully friendly animals and we also got a chance to wander around the Wildlife park afterwards. Well worth the booking!
